Operating a forklift is a task that should not be taken lightly. There are plenty of things to consider while operating a forklift safely. Forklifts can certainly make your work easier, but if not operated correctly they can be quite dangerous.

Forklifts should be operated by qualified operators only. That means that everyone operating a forklift should have been trained and should be licensed to do so. Forklift operators should be sure that they are wearing appropriate clothing. Safety gear includes a hard hat, a high-visibility jacket, and safety shoes. Loose clothing should not be worn as it can get caught in the machinery.

Once the operator is ready to go, the forklift should be inspected. The equipment should be inspected daily or each time it’s about to be operated. Any equipment requiring repairs should not be operated. Check all important areas of the forklift including brakes, controls, steering, and more.

Use the steps and hand grabs of the forklift to make sure you are seated correctly. Make sure you can reach all controls and that the mirrors are adjusted to your needs. Do not start the forklift until the safety belt is fastened and you are ready to go. Be sure that your path is clear and use a spotter or sound your horn in warning if you don’t have a clear view. While operating the forklift, be sure to operate at a safe speed and to avoid hazards. Ensure that your load is both stable and secure and that you have clear visibility. Be sure your forklift is not overloaded and that the load is evenly distributed.

These are just some of the many forklift safety techniques to be sure to practice before, during, and after operating a forklift. If you’re looking for a new forklift or need service or parts for an existing forklift, contact Atlas Toyota.
